LED driver IC can be divided into general chip and special chip. General chips used for low-end LED display products, such as  indoor monochrome LED display and double color LED display. The most commonly used general chip is 74HC595, it has 8-bit latch,  shift register and three-state output function. Maximum output current 35mA. LED display IC manufacturers can generally produce  such chips.
As the LED is the device of current characteristics, in the premise of the saturated conduction, its brightness change with the  current size. Therefore, one of the greatest features of special chip is provide constant current source. constant current source can guarantee the stability of LED display drive. The following will highlight the special LED display driver chip problems.
1. Power consumption and heat issues
Since the output current is large, LED display chip's power consumption and heat issues. It may occur in the future handheld LED display drive, this problem will become particularly prominent. With the LED device manufacturing technology advances and the drive current decreases, the problem will be solved gradually.
2. Application of cost
A steady-state 16-bit current mainstream LED display driver chip can drive 16 of the LED devices. A resolution of 1024 × 768 LED display must use multiple chips to achieve the desired results, thus making the material cost is relatively high. If you use self-scanning mode of driver chip, then a mainstream chip can drive multiple LED display, which will reduce the cost.
